Female characters are rarely categorized this way, though. I'd prefer using the existing crossdressing tag rather than creating a new tag like gender disguise, especially since the current gender-related tags are already somewhat redundant.

Id describe it this way Characters who wear clothing traditionally associated with another gender. Stories or artwork with this tag often involve disguises, gender-based misunderstandings, role-playing, or characters expressing themselves through different styles of dress.

Crossdressing doesn't mean male wearing female clothes. It goes both ways and since someone said "nobody refers to females dressing in men's clothing as crossdressing" I say hi, I do. I like those stories where girls wear masculine clothing either to crossdress or just simply because they like it.

I feel like cross-dressing can go both ways. Most famous western media example is the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night, where a young woman Viola impersonates her twin brother Sebastian, and love triangle hijinks ensue.
