Tag description Tag is used to describe the translation of one language (usually JP) into another (usually EN). Done in a sub-par way, resulting in faulty grammar or spelling.
Their needs to be an AI translation tag, as open to interpretation as that would be. you just know it when you see it. because the people using it lack basic english knowledge enough to fix the most obvious grammatical mistakes.
a good amount of series get flagged as rough tl when only the dialogue gets translated and not sfx and signage or something even when the inner thoughts/talking is fine so you can still follow the story and understand clearly so some small context on that would be nice. smth like
“tag is used to describe a translation of one language to the next that is generally considered hard to follow, sub-par, or confusing, resulting in faulty grammar or spelling. Not to be confused with machine translation”
idk i feel like that gives it more range without harping on jp and getting too wordy with some context but yeah
This tag is ostensibly intended to mean the person who translated a gallery has no fucking idea what they're doing (or, more accurately, used AI for the translation).
@Bbocchi_Chirk Rough translation is already an ambiguous enough tag without adding further qualifiers. We've been flagging MTL stuff on this site as rough translation for more than seven years now, so the inertia's there to just keep doing that.
@Bbocchi_Chirk The tag is used as a descriptor of the quality of the translation, not the method. Hypothetically if a machine translated work has a good translation then this tag would not be needed.
@Kalashnl I think the description here should mention that it is for mistranslations made by humans, not by automated tools.
In works where the translator used mtl tools but proofread the script, I suppose they still can be considered human-made translations, because at least they were proofread by a human. Most of the mtl works lacks coherency between pages.
@Bbocchi_Chirk there seems to be difference between machine translated and rough translation, but it is very similar that putting them side to side is not very much different. But it would be better if there is separate tags for this, as machine translation does not know the context of the whole medium, and a rough translator would translate the context as is they know (usually just raw meaning) with the context still there.
There would always be exception tho, as there are people who use mtl to speed up process while bridging the gap of context with their already existing knowledge of the medium, and translator with wrong knowledge of the medium.
Also, from severity standpoint, most mtl are bad if done just as is, and rough translation is just wording difficulties from the translator's side, resulting in confusing string of word or caveman language in extreme cases (as in "i run, i no think, i down grass, i arm pain, i cry, i sad, pain bad. i walk, i safe, safe no pain, safe good").
Now that we have a machine translation tag should they be mutually exclusive? Or mtl works will have both of them? Either way I think it should be noted in the tag description.
