All versions of the following may exist simultaneously: Translated and Raw versions Rewrites Translations by different translators Different censorships Colored and Uncolored versions Uncensored and Censored versions Paper scans and Digital versions Digital tankoubons do override paper scans that are not full tankoubons (and vice-versa) Imagesets of any theme. There is no such thing as a "more complete" collection in this regard. New imagesets being identical to already posted imagesets can still be replacements.

Replacing priority based on source: 1 Original artist posting their own art Followed by the writer 2 Translator posting their own translation Followed by the cleaner/editor Followed by any other member of the group that worked on the project Followed by any other known member of the group 3 Commissioner of the art or translation 4 Everyone else Priority 1-2 galleries can only be replaced if the new gallery is from the same source (or another member of the same translation team). A priority 2 upload cannot be replaced by a reupload from the artist (i.e., priority 1). For such scenarios, both galleries should co-exist.

The following factors also make a gallery superior to other versions: Corrected Order Front cover placement. For non-covers this only applies to stories or other instances where image order actually matters. Better Quality Images should be as released by the source. Conversions, retouching, leveling, splitting double-pages into singles, or removing original source watermarks do not count. This includes cleaner scans, no watermarks/scanmarks, increased legibility of text, no folding marks, less artifacts, more visible contrast, etc. Maximum DPI is 300; anything greater is considered excessive. Single page scans are preferred over double-page scans. A fully complete gallery may replace an incomplete one of superior image quality; however, if both galleries are incomplete in different ways then they both stay.(Ref) Larger Resolution Upscales do NOT qualify. Duplicate Images Removed Updated Translations The edits must have been done by the same translator(s).

Undesireable content: Should replace older gallery? Not at all. If the gallery is a digital release without third-party tempering (i.e. digital RAW), this makes it replaceable with the one without the undesirable content. What does this include? Cropped versions of existing images not included in the original work. Logos, banners, or advertisements that are not included in the original release.

Noncontent: Not at all, do not mark a gallery replaced. Blank pages or pages that are effectively blank. Split versions of double pages that are already included. The same applies to book spines. Any "uncleaned" versions of images that are already cleaned and included. Cropped "preview" images not directly included in the work, such as pixivFANBOX post preview images.

Exteaneous content: Can be included but cannot replace an existing gallery with all of its core content. CG set backgrounds or character portraits. Credit pages that are not part of the work besides those for translators (e.g. credits from the scanners, colorizers, or decensors). Any smaller resolution versions of existing images. Any additions to a translated gallery not included in the translator's release, even if the release is incomplete. Sketches or otherwise unfinished pages to an ongoing work. User-generated clips or screenshots derived from video content included with the set.

Core content: Always. A gallery missing any core content can be replaced by one that has more/all of it. Any story images. Variant CG (with both character(s) and a background present). Colophons, omake, and original credit pages. Cover pages (included within the set > official promotional website > online stores). Only 1 source is needed in the set. Translator credit pages. Only 1 is needed per translation group (even if team members change from chapter to chapter). Any advertisements included in the original work.

A newer higher-quality and clearly marked copy of this gallery has been uploaded. A superior version now exists which makes the current gallery inferior. Imageset-style galleries can only be replaced by other users when the following is true: If multiple overlapping image set galleries for the same artist, they can be replaced with a single gallery that contains all the content. This is only applicable if the galleries share a subset of the content, but where no single gallery supersedes (i.e. contains all the content of) the others. This is specifically not applicable for galleries that are split for a valid reason, like for having different sources, or for reaching the page count or filesize limits, or otherwise being split in a sane and clearly labeled way. Images unrelated to the artist can be disregarded.

@akashako and if there are more than two galleries? when there are identical (duplicates), how do you choose which is the better one? Not saying we shouldn't have it, but I think a way to group together the same work in a sort of playlist would be helpful for letting users find the best possible version without relying on the always changing replaced/duplicate tags. perhaps that's out of scope on the taxonomy page though

describe replaced +31 is already a tag and it does the opposite job. Newer galleries that are higher resolution, better translation, or more complete replace older galleries. The older, lower quality galleries are tagged with describe replaced +31 .

Here are 7 separate galleries of the exact same work: #1 Chinese with bar censorship #2 Identical duplicate of #1 #3 Japanese with bar censorship #4 Japanese with mosaic censorship #5 English with mosaic censorship #6 English with bar censorship #7 English with bar censorship, but different translation #2 should be removed from the site, but the rest of these serve a purpose. #7 specifically offers a different English translation that some users may prefer over #6.

yall what if there was a playlist sort of feature where we could group together same works. For example, imagine a work titled "Notohime" has three galleries: one English, one Japanese, and one Chinese. If I'm on the English gallery, I could suggest grouping it with the Japanese and Chinese galleries using their respective codes. Other users would vote on whether they all belong together as a "playlist," of course creating the playlist when the suggestion is popular enough. The playlist would be accessible from any of the galleries in the playlist If "Notohime" had two different galleries of the same language that were not identical (i.e. fan-colored vs b&w, different censorship, different translator group, etc), users would be able to use the playlist determine which specific gallery is best for them Of course, identical duplicates should be removed from the site. Not sure how that would fit into this feature exactly. To be clear, this is not for multi-work series

Not sure if a tag is needed, but rather a reporting way. And how would you know what its a duplicate of? Re-searching for the title? What counts as duplicate? If its a manual visual inspection then its subjective and can lead to false positive - and something like hash value(s) of images only makes more prone.

We absolutely need this. Tanetsuke Inferno by Marui Maru is a perfect example in English. Exact same fucking translation, exact same fucking image quality/resolution. Zero fucking differences except the newer upload has fewer relevant tags. It does nothing but clog up space on the site. Unless nhentai wants to add a report feature, this is the only solution.
