note I understand that the term "pov" means point of view, however the term has become synonymous with first person perspective. Setting it to pov would make it easier for users to find the tag and subsequently add it to works featuring a first person persective

POV stands for point of view. Point of view of what? Point of view from the sky? Point of view from a potted plant? Point of view from a sock? Point of view of a camera?

The current name is already precise, I don't see any reason to shorten/rename it. Just because you think most people have synonymized it with first person perspective doesn't mean that's actually the case, and trading accuracy for familiarity isn't fair, because people who actually know POV's real meaning would be confused finding it used to mean only first person, when it also covers second and third person perspectives.
