tbh instead of deleting or merging galleries, what if we stored them in a sort of communal playlist. it would hold "duplicate" galleries as voted on by the community
each playlist would store gallery codes of "reposted" content; things like separate languages, censorship, translation groups, and so on.
i.e. both of these would be in a playlist which allows users to find the best one to them. if there was a japanese version, it would also be in this playlist #664216|Metamorphosis Chapter 3|2,226#616358|Metamorphosis|17,628
it doesn't remove all of the duplicates from searches, but it lets users quickly identify the best version of the content
as for @GenerallyHidden's concerns, i have also proposed a recolored tag to differentiate reposts from recolors below. however, i'm hesitant to add a "new pages" tag, because i feel like such a tag could easily be exploited to essentially bypass the goal of this repost tag. there's also already an uncensored tag you can use.

i agree that reposts should be either deleted or merged, but that's not really within my control. i think this is the best solution someone like me could propose.
@Thiccumz12 If that actually becomes a possiblity I would totally go for it. Like I get if you remove an outdated work that somebody favorited then they might not be able to find it anymore or be confused by it. But merging like we're merging tags would make absolutely sense, especially if the outdated pages are a 1:1 in the updated work
